Running in Pairs

Last week, I was reintroduced to an old friend.  I hadn’t run in nearly 6 months.  And with the hustle and bustle of Fall, I had no immediate plans to revisit my running routine.  Running was something I had always done solo.  Away from the kids; just me and my thoughts.  It was an escape of sorts.  That is until Hanah asked me to join her.  My 17 yr old daughter is a Senior this year.  And any time she chooses to spend with me- I am there.  I will even be joining her on a field trip next week.  A far cry from our first trip to the Pumpkin Patch when she was 5.  We will be attending UCSB for a team building ropes course~ complete with zip lining and wall climbing.

Running with Hanah is therapy.  We run after the sun sets, so we can enjoy the coolness of the evening and Halloween Lights.  We talk about the day’s events, we laugh when we have to dodge the same pick up truck’s huge, trailer hitch, and squeal when we hear a critter in the bushes.  She’s faster than me(when did that happen?) and I find myself struggling to keep up.   Last night, as we were finishing, the sprinklers came on at a nearby house, we ran in unison through them almost as if it were a synchronized dance.

I am thankful she has chosen me to spend this time with her.  Next October – she will be away at college.  It’s our last Fall together as mother and little girl.  But, I find solace in that, even though Hanah runs a few steps ahead of me now~she will always stop and wait for her mommy.

Weekend Thoughts

The first week in October is off to a great start.  A rain storm made a brief appearance and brought a quick drop in temperatures here in California.  It was fun to pull out my out my favorite wool socks and boots(if even for a day).   With a beach wedding this afternoon though, I was happy the storm left just as quickly as it arrived.

Tomorrow is the Avocado Festival in Carpenteria where my friend, Ali will be debuting her Sweet Avocado Pies and then on Sunday, we are gathering with our new neighbors for a community BBQ(thank God it’s the Cowboys’ bye week).

Enjoy the weekend my friends!

Thinking About Today…

I can feel it in the air.  Fall.  A time for the leaves to change, the weather to change and our summer routines to change.

And football!

Fall is my favorite time of year.  I will say this with a teeny bit of guilt. But I love that the kids are headed back to school and the routines that follow.

I look forward to baking comfort foods, as the sun fades into the night.

I love my cooler-weather wardrobe and hope to make a collage of my favorite trends(on a budget) this weekend to share with you.  And lastly, I love that this fall, there will be a few changes in our life.  Moving is one of them.

What do you love about Fall?

Flashback Friday~Warrant

Yesterday, on MTV’s news feed via Facebook, I saw the video to Warrant’s “Cherry Pie”.  I instinctively posted it on my friend’s wall.  About 20 years ago, that song was the background to many, youthful memories.  Well, you can imagine my shock when I woke to news that the lead singer of one of my favorite bands from the 90’s had passed.  Jani Lane was only 47 and just 20 years ago, was one of the kings of the Sunset Strip music scene.  As young, women perusing the strip in the early 90’s it was not out of the ordinary to catch a glimpse of Jani and his then-girlfriend/wife, Bobbi Brown out club hopping.  They were the “it” couple around Hollywood.  Jani had a distinctive voice and you couldn’t help but feel good when you listened to a tune like “Down Boys” or  be touched by more serious songs like~ “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and “I Saw Red”.

Jani, you made an impact on my youth and for that I hope you have finally found your “Heaven”.

Flashback Friday~ Paulina

To me~ Paulina epitomizes the word Supermodel.  As a young girl growing up in the 80’s, she was everywhere I wanted to be.   I First spotted her in the Car’s video for their haunting song, Drive.  She played a young woman, struggling with her own demons and without uttering a word, she made a huge impact on my teenaged heart.   The 5’11” beauty graced countless magazine covers and at the age of 18, she was the first woman from Eastern Europe to appear on the cover of Sport’s Illustrated’s Swimsuit Edition.  In 1989, she and Car’s front man Ric Ocasek married and went on to have two children.  They will be celebrating their 22nd wedding anniversary this month.  Paulina has acted, written and directed.  Most recently has appeared on Dancing With The Stars and  Project Runway~ where she was fired on her birthday due to her “ego problem”.  Rumor has it, Tyra may be the one with the ego problem.

“Nothing ages as poorly as a beautiful woman’s ego,” says Paulina Porizkova

Other “supermodels” should have taken a cue from the way Paulina Porizkova handled her fame.  She traveled fashion’s fast lane- less like the hare and more like the tortoise~slow and steady.  And I can honestly say, I still want to be where Paulina is.

The Age Issue

Exactly one month from today, I will be entering a new decade.  It is a day, I have been dreading for years. Especially, in a time where(for the right price), turning back the clock on your face is well~as easy as, turning back your clock.  I think women of today, have a much harder time aging than our mothers did.  It seems after 30, mom pretty much pulled on her elastic waistband,  polyester pants and called it a day.  But now, we hear “50 is the new 40”, “40 is the new 30” and “20 is the new 10?”.  Explains a lot.  And it adds more pressure for us to spend time and money on recapturing our youth.  I also think, with looking younger, comes acting younger.  Which is not always a good thing.

For me acting younger was, taking things for granted.  I carried this bad habit, like a coveted Gucci Bag, straight from my 20’s into my 30’s.  And though I don’t have a choice but to take my 40-year-old ass into a new decade, I do have the choice to leave that old habit behind(no pun intended).

Meatless Monday~ Why?

{asparagus and goat cheese pasta}

As you know, MM is a weekly staple in my home and blog.  Over the past 20 years, I have gone back and forth with Vegatarianism~taking a year off here and there.  Once, I discovered “Meatless Mondays“, I found it an easy commitment to make for myself and my family.  To some, it may sound difficult. But, it really is very simple.  Here are a few of the reasons, I like to limit our consumption of meat. Please click link to view more information on the subject.

1.) Eating less meat is better for our health
2.) The Environment
3.) Humane treatment of farm animals
And here is a sample menu of what I may serve on a MM:

Breakfast~French Toast and Fruit

Lunch~ PBJ or Nutella Sandwich, Fruit, Yogurt, Crackers

Dinner~Spaghetti with Marinara Sauce, Salad and Garlic Bread

I hope you found some insightful information today and may choose to jump on our Meatless Monday bandwagon.  Happy eating!

Friday Thoughts~OC Fashion

What can I say? I’m a Housewives Junkie.  OC, NY, BH, NJ~ Love them!  Is it the clothes? Cars? Homes? Or the simple fact, one episode is like a month in therapy.  No matter, how crazy I think my life is at times, a quick tune into BRAVO and I suddenly feel serene.

Alexis is certainly not my favorite housewife on OC.  But when she wore this dress on her husband’s vacation(ha ha) to San Diego a few episodes back, I instantly fell for it.  And  imagine my surprise to learn that it’s by none other than~ Alexis Couture.  Though, I didn’t find it under the “Couture” button on her site. It was the only item under the “Casual” one.  It’s also the only dress under $100!

Did I mention, she’s also the model for her line?  That’s right~ God First, Jim Second, Alexis’ Ego..er I mean..Kids Third…

Not So Mellow Yellow~

`

Though my Mother’s Day was phenomenal, I did wake up with a pretty, bad head cold.  So, I was relieved to have an actual excuse to stay in bed for a few hours longer than normal.  An added bonus was stumbling upon a chick flick right away.  How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is one of those predictable love stories.  And the highlight for me is the final scene where Kate Hudson appears in this yellow evening gown.  When I first watched it 8 years ago, I would’ve bet money the gown was designed by Valentino.  Boy was I surprised to learn it was actually created by Karen Pach~the movie’s costume designer.   The dress is a golden, silk charmeuse and Ms Pach created it  around the 84-carat yellow diamond pendant which Kate’s character Andi wears to the gala.  This dress was a much bigger hit than the movie and for me sits right up there with the stunning white dress by Helen Rose that Liz Taylor wore in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

My English Royalty~

Here are some of my favorite Brits~ Enjoy your weekend!
